C'est une longue et belle histoire que celle d'Ossyane, qui traverse les cinquante dernières années en passant par Beyrouth, Haïfa et la France, mêlant la Résistance et le conflit israélo-arabe. Ossyane, donc, venu du Liban et qui, par le hasard de ses études à Paris, devient un héros de la Résistance. Il rencontrera Clara, une jeune juive, qu'il épousera à la Libération et dont il aura une fille. Mais une guerre est à peine terminée que l'autre - celle du Proche-Orient déchiré - commence... Ossyane et Clara seront donc séparés par l'histoire. Ils seront séparés, aussi, par la folie qui s'empare d'Ossyane. Ce n'est qu'à la dernière page du roman qu'ils se retrouveront.

Ossyane, a young Lebanese of both aristocratic Ottoman and humble Armenian origins, goes to Montpellier to study away from the burden of his liberal father¹s revolutionary ambitions. World War II breaks out and Ossyane is drawn into the Resistance where he meets Clara who is Jewish. He returns to Beirut and, despite the obstacles, to a happy marriage with Clara. The Jewish-Muslim couple move to Haifa but, if one war has made a hero out of Ossyane, another, much closer to home, is destined to split him from his wife and separate him from the world and the people that he loves. In this delicate and compassionate novel Amin Maalouf brings the struggles in the Levant in the wake of World War II painfully to life. The tribulations and separations of Ossyane and Clara reflect, at an individual level, the problems that have beset the Middle East for fifty years.

النيل والفرات : "موانئ المشرق" هو الإسم الذي كان يطلق على تلك المجموعة من المدن التجارية التي كان المسافرون الأوروبيون يعبرونها إلى الشرق، من القسطنطينية إلى الإسكندرية، مروراً بإزمير وأضنة أو بيروت. وكانت هذه المدن بوتقة تنصهر فيها اللغات والعادات والمعتقدات، وعوالم هشّة بناها التاريخ متمهلاً قبل الإطاحة بها وتحطيم حياة الكثيرين . و"عصيان" بطل هذه الرواية، هو أحد هؤلاء الأشخاص الذين عصفت بهم رياح الأقدار، فحياته لم تكن أكثر من قشة في مهبّ الريح، وسط احتضار السلطنة العثمانية، والحربين العالميتين والمآسي التي لا تزال حتى اليوم تعصف بالشرق الأدنى. وهو يستحضر ذكرياته بصبر وأناة، ويتحدث عن طفولته الأرستقراطية، وشقيقه السافل، وإقامته في فرنسا تحت الإحتلال النازي، ولقائه بكلارا، الحبيبة العابرة، ولحظات الهيام والبطولات والأحكام، ثم رحلته إلى أعماق الجحيم . ماذا بقي له بعد أن سُلب مستقبله وكرامته وحُرم أبسط الأفراح؟ لم يبق سوى حب ينتظر، حب هادئ ولكنه قوي، وربما أقوى من التاريخ
